About the Course

We have prepared a very powerful workshop for those who want to make a good start in illustration or take themselves to the next level. Our workshop will include video lessons, reading materials, educational video sharing and scheduled homework every week. All homework will be reviewed by our mentor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Korkut Öztekin and detailed feedback will be given. We are waiting for everyone who wants to enter the sector and raise their design awareness in this workshop with a high learning experience.

Who is the Workshop for?

Beginner:

This workshop is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the basics of illustration for those just starting out, allowing you to explore a variety of styles and techniques. If you want to understand the role of illustration in different industries and build a solid foundation, this workshop is the perfect place to start.

Intermediate:

If you have some experience and have some work under your belt but have yet to establish your style, this workshop will focus on digital illustration tools and character design, helping you develop your techniques and developing a distinctive style.

Advanced:

If you already have a good amount of practice and experience and want to take your skills to the professional level, this workshop will provide you with advanced techniques and professional development. You will understand complex concepts such as perspective, dynamic poses, and creating a holistic portfolio. You will develop projects based on your personal interests, challenging and expanding your skills.

Topics

Week 1 and 2

Introduction to the course and expectations
Understanding the role of illustration in various industries
Basic principles of composition, balance and focal points
The process of sketching and developing ideas

Week 3 and 4

Introduction to digital illustration software (Adobe Illustrator, Procreate, etc.)
Understanding layers, brushes, and other basic tools
Creating a simple digital illustration from start to finish
Digital coloring techniques and shading
Integrating textures and patterns into digital work

Week 5 and 6

Principles of character design: anatomy, proportion, and expression
Creating compelling characters with distinct personalities
Character design for different genres (fantasy, science fiction, children’s books, etc.)
Creating a visual narrative: storyboarding and sequential art
Examples of successful character-focused illustrations

Week 7 and 8

Exploring advanced illustration techniques (perspective, lighting, dynamic poses)
Introduction to vector illustration and its applications
Collaborating with clients: understanding instructions and responding to expectations
Creating an illustration portfolio and online presence
Final project: creating an illustration based on personal interests or a given topic

Our Instructor

Doç.Dr. Korkut Öztekin

Korkut Öztekin was born in 1976 in İzmir. He graduated from İzmir Anatolian Fine Arts High School in 1994 and from Bilkent
University, Department of Graphic Design, where he studied with a scholarship in 2002.
He completed his postgraduate studies focused on consecutive arts at Dokuz Eylül University in 2005.
Öztekin worked as an editor and editor-in-chief at Graphic Design magazine.
Korkut Öztekin’s “Manga is a Cultural Resistance Tool”, a research on Japanese comics and culture based on his
Proficiency/PhD studies in Art, was published by İletişim Publications in 2013.
He worked as a freelance cartoonist in comics art, producing covers and illustrations for some literary works.
He became known for his work in the Turkish comics series Deli Gücük, which collected ghost stories set in the rural areas of Ottoman Anatolia.
He supported Tom Garcia on Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: The Dark Watch series. He worked as the lead artist on Frank Miller’s RoboCop: Last Stand comic book series. He illustrated Out of the Woods, a biographical self-help book on depression and anxiety written by New Zealand human rights lawyer Brent Williams. Out of the Woods won the Benjamin Franklin Award for best self-help book in 2018. Öztekin continues his academic studies as a faculty member at G.S.F.’s Graphic Arts A.S.D.
