We’ve designed a powerful and inspiring Pattern Workshop for anyone looking to explore the art of visual self-expression or take their creative skills to the next level.
Whether you’re just beginning your journey into pattern design or already creating, this workshop offers a high-impact learning experience guided by an expert.

The program is delivered through live online classes on a user-friendly platform. Each week includes real-time lessons, guided demonstrations, selected readings, practical exercises, and assignments. All submitted work will be personally reviewed by our mentor Prof. Dr. Korkut Öztekin, who will provide detailed and constructive feedback.

If you miss a class — no worries. Every session will be recorded and stored on a private learning platform accessible only to our students, so you can catch up anytime.

This workshop is open to anyone interested in exploring pattern as a visual language — from curious beginners to experienced creatives looking to deepen their artistic practice.

Who is the Workshop for?

Our workshop is open to participants of all levels.

Beginner Level:

This workshop is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the basics of patterning for those starting from scratch, enabling you to explore and advance concepts such as basic drawing techniques, perspective, and shading. If you want to understand the basics of pattern, its development and role with concepts such as anatomy rules, tone and textures, composition, complex media and create a solid foundation, this workshop will be the perfect starting point for you.

Intermediate:

If you have some experience and are doing certain works but have not yet established your style, this workshop will help you improve your pattern by focusing on pattern tools and different drawing techniques and will play a critical role in creating a distinctive style.

Advanced Level:

If you already have good practice and experience and want to take your skills to a professional field, this workshop offers you advanced techniques and professional development. You’ll understand complex concepts like perspective, dynamic poses, and creating a holistic portfolio. You will develop projects based on your personal interests that will challenge and expand your abilities.

Topics

Week 1-2: Strengthening Fundamental Drawing Skills

Introduction to the course and its objectives
Revisiting foundational drawing techniques: line, shape, form
Advanced perspective drawing: one-point, two-point, and three-point perspective
Exploring advanced shading techniques: cross-hatching, stippling, blending
Critique and improvement of participants’ existing artwork

Week 3-4: Mastering Realistic Portraiture

In-depth study of facial anatomy and proportions
Achieving realistic features: eyes, nose, mouth, ears
Understanding and rendering skin tones and textures
Capturing expressions and emotions in portraits
Step-by-step process of creating a detailed portrait

Week 5-6: Composition and Visual Storytelling

Advanced composition principles: rule of thirds, golden ratio, focal points
Creating dynamic and visually engaging compositions
Using contrast and values to enhance storytelling
Incorporating symbolism and visual metaphors
Workshop: Designing a complex composition from scratch

Week 7-8: Exploring Mixed Media and Experimental Techniques

Introduction to mixed media: combining traditional and digital tools
Exploring experimental drawing techniques: collage, ink wash, mixed media layering
Incorporating texture and three-dimensionality in drawings
Creating mood and atmosphere through unconventional techniques
Final project: A mixed media artwork showcasing advanced skills

Our Instructor

Doç.Dr. Korkut Öztekin

Korkut Öztekin was born in 1976 in İzmir. He graduated from İzmir Anatolian Fine Arts High School in 1994 and from Bilkent
University, Department of Graphic Design, where he studied with a scholarship in 2002.
He completed his postgraduate studies focused on consecutive arts at Dokuz Eylül University in 2005.
Öztekin worked as an editor and editor-in-chief at Graphic Design magazine.
Korkut Öztekin’s “Manga is a Cultural Resistance Tool”, a research on Japanese comics and culture based on his
Proficiency/PhD studies in Art, was published by İletişim Publications in 2013.
He worked as a freelance cartoonist in comics art, producing covers and illustrations for some literary works.
He became known for his work in the Turkish comics series Deli Gücük, which collected ghost stories set in the rural areas of Ottoman Anatolia.
He supported Tom Garcia on Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: The Dark Watch series. He worked as the lead artist on Frank Miller’s RoboCop: Last Stand comic book series. He illustrated Out of the Woods, a biographical self-help book on depression and anxiety written by New Zealand human rights lawyer Brent Williams. Out of the Woods won the Benjamin Franklin Award for best self-help book in 2018. Öztekin continues his academic studies as a faculty member at G.S.F.’s Graphic Arts A.S.D.
